The Atari Jaguar

The Jaguar is gaming console that was released by Atari in 1993. It was the first 64bit console to be released by any vendor, and the last console to be developed and manufactured by Atari.

Commercial Impact

The Jaguar was intended to capture a market which at the time was dominated by the 16-bit Sega Megadrive and Super Nintendo. The Jaguar suffered from supply problems, an initial lack of quality games, poor developer support, and as a result was not able to capitalise on the market situation before the arrival of the Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo 64. As such, the Jaguar never achieved real commercial success.

Relatives

The Jaguar was preceded by the 32bit Panther, and was the predecessor of the planned 64/128bit Jaguar II, neither of which were developed beyond the prototype stage.

Games

A number of critically acclaimed games were released on the Jaguar, such as Tempest 2000 and Alien vs Predator. For a complete list of Jaguar games, see the Jaguar Games List.
