The ST has a variety of ports and connectors with which to expand it's capabilities. These are a mixture of industry standard and proprietary ports. Depending upon the model these can include the following:

Industry standard:

  • RS232c serial port - This port can lend its hand for a variety of uses but its most common task is communications.
  • Centronics Parallel port - A versatile port which is most commonly used for connecting a printer.
  • Joystick/mouse ports - This Atari designed port became an industry standard in the height of its console dominance.
  • Midi ports - These ports are more or less MIDI standard. The ST was the first home computer to incorporate MIDI ports into its design.
  • Stereo audio ports - Arriving with the STE, these allow connection to a suitable HiFi or monitor.
  • SIMM - These slots provide an easy and cheap way to upgrade the memory with up to 4Mb. They are not available for the earlier ST range.

Proprietary:

  • ACSI DMA port - This is primarily used to connect hard drives.
  • Cartridge port - This allows 128k ROM cartridges which can be used to add capabilities to the ST or just to load software.
  • Floppy port - This port allows the connection of a second floppy drive.
  • Monitor port - This port allows connection to Atari-made monitors or other monitors with the appropriate cable.

These are just a few of the many ways to expand or enhance the ST internally and externally, with many products still being designed to this day.
